Welcome.
“Come come, whoever you are. Wonderer, worshipper, lover of leaving. It doesn’t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair. Come, even if you have broken your vow a thousand times. Come, yet again, come (Jalaluddin Rumi)”
Athens Sufi Gathering is a new group founded in 2024 that meets regularly at a venue space in Athens called Work.Shop (160 Winston Dr #9, Athens, GA 30601). We provide opportunities to engage in Sufi Muslim practices and spiritual discussions to anyone who is interested in spiritual development in a non-judgmental environment grounded in Sufi beliefs and practice. Our goal is to know and challenge ourselves, elevate others, develop spiritual wisdom, and deepen our connection to our Creator. We pray together, do group meditative chanting with a drum and then have spiritual discussions. Note that our gathering times change so please check the Calendar for exact times and dates.
What is Athens Sufi Gathering?
Athens Sufi Gathering is a welcoming home for souls seeking spiritual development, community, and a deeper connection with their Creator through engagement with Sufi Muslim concepts and practices. We are committed to life-breathing messages and discussions that center around spiritual growth and developing an ever-deepening relationship with the One. We seek to read the Creator's messages in our lives and taste the presence of the divine in every moment.
What is Sufism?
Sufism is the Islamic path of spiritual purification and journeying to God. Sufis seek a direct, personal experience of God, often described as an intimate and loving relationship to the divine. We emphasize the purification of the heart and soul from worldly attachments and egoic desires and that life’s purpose is to evolve to higher and higher levels of consciousness of God's presence in our everyday lives, thus returning to one's divine origin. The highest level of consciousness is to be "a child of one's moment", meaning to live in the here and now, reading the Creator's messages, and attuning yourself to the divine flow of love and compassion that brings everything into existence. Love of God and others is central to Sufi practice. Sufis believe that passionate love for God is the driving force behind the soul’s development and that it should be the primary driving force in one’s life. The evolution of the soul is not only an individual journey, but contributes to the collective spiritual elevation of humanity. See our Resources page for more information on our beliefs and practice and further recommended readings on Sufism.
